A Study on Wellbeing, Emotions & Smartphone Use

Hi! I'm Melissa Glass, a doctoral student in psychology at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, California.

The proliferation and increasing intelligence of our mobile devices continue to alter how we relate not only to each other but to our devices themselves.

I am conducting a study to explore the ways in which smartphone use may be affecting you.

Your participation would assist in the completion of my dissertation research, and I would be grateful for your support!

  • Participation

What to expect if you decide to participate in this study.

This research will include a survey (self-report) and screenshot uploads of your smartphone usage from the previous week.

    Phase1:

    1. Brief demographics questionnaire that will include standard questions asking for you to confirm your age, gender, race, ethnicity, etc.
    2. One survey will include a series of questions about your current feelings, emotions, and the use of your smartphone. It should take about 10-15 minutes.

    Phase 2:

    1. Depending on what type of phone you have, you will use either Apple Screen Time or Android Digital Wellbeing to send screenshots of your phone usage from the previous week to the researcher via email at PSUresearch2122@gmail.com. This should take you no more than 3-5 minutes.
  • Smartphone Screenshot Examples

These will be sent directly to the researcher at PSUresearch2122@gmail.com upon completion of the survey.

    Android Digital Wellbeing

Digital Wellbeing may look different on various Android phones, yet they all share the same capability of showing your daily and weekly usage. For the screenshot, it should be for the past week and include the screen time average and top 3 most used apps. *Please note: you may not be able to do this with a Pixel phone.*
